Blog Church - Week 16

This is Blog Church, and I am your online pastor, Rev. JD.
Sister Rachel will be serving Chocolate-Covered Cake Balls after the service in the foyer. She is using her gift of hospitality to bless us all. Bottled water will be provided by Brother and Mrs. Jim who are using their gift of generosity. Brother Cliff offered to entertain us by clog dancing, but I saw him warming up in the parking lot this morning, and I decided that his gift of cleaning up would be of more service to us today.

Today's sermon is called "Be a Happy Toe!"

Turn in your virtual Bibles and let's read Romans 12:4-5 together:
"Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other."

The Body of Christ and The Church are the same thing. Some may think of The Church as The Vatican or a particular church building, but The Church is actually made up of people who are believers in Christ.
The Bible paints a vivid word picture using a human body in order for us to understand how The Church works. Christ acts as the head and every Christian is part of his body. Each person plays a role; each person is valued.
You may be thinking, "I'm not very important because I'm just a stupid, old toe. Why can't I be a heart or a lung or something vital like that?"

Here's what I Corinthians 12:17-22 has to say:
If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? Our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange a body would be if it had only one part! Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.

So you're a toe.
Have you ever stubbed a toe? Or even worse, have you ever had a toenail ripped off like my dad did a couple of times when he was playing sports? YOWzer!!! That HURTS!!! Suddenly, the WHOLE body pays attention to that toe. Why? Because the nerves are going crazy with pain because the toe is injured. You find yourself hobbling over to sit down and comfort the toe.
After the injury, it takes awhile for the body to get back to normal because the toe has been out of whack and not functioning properly. Other parts have to accommodate until the toe is back working at full capacity.

I Cor. 12:26-27 says, "If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it."

Another analogy used to describe The Body of Christ is The Family of God. That's why people are often called Brother or Sister within a church setting. Imagine what a loving family acts like. They look out for and protect each other. They help and encourage each other. When something great happens to one of them, they all rejoice. When something bad happens to one of them, they all sorrow. When one of them dies, they all grieve.

As a toe, your gift may be that you are very friendly and easy to talk to. You may be a good listener. You may naturally be an encourager. You may not be an attention getter. You may think you're not nearly as important as the minister who is up front, preaching a sermon and serving God in a more demonstrative fashion. EVERYone hears the minister and recognizes the importance of that position, right? You may not feel very important being a gnarly, insignificant toe.

Sometimes people's minds wander off during the sermon. It is sad, but true.
HEY YOU over there, WAKE UP!!! Where are those tasers??!!
Someone may not have gotten much from what the pastor said because their mind was burdened with problems. They may feel terribly down that day for some reason. That person may cross your path, and you smile at them and say hello. You pay them a compliment and begin an easy, casual conversation. You talk for awhile, and the person's burdened mind feels lighter for having spent time with you.
Their problems didn't vanish, but their outlook and attitude were changed because of your encouragement and kind attention. They leave there strengthened and ready to tackle their problems.
The truth is, for that person on that day, YOU were more valuable to them than the minister. By simply doing what came naturally, you made a positive difference. Your giftedness was necessary and important. While the minister was gabbing in the foyer discussing the need for new choir robes with Sister Christina and indulging in gluttony on Sister Rachel's Cake Balls, YOU were doing your part in The Body of Christ, The Family of God, The Church.
Be a happy toe!

Romans 12:8-9 says, "If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them."

And everybody said... AMEN!!!

WOW! I get to sit in back again today!
I just want to add Romans 12:12 "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer." Keeping all those things will help you to be a happy toe!
Good sermon, Rev.
AMEN!
(Did you see how I got that sleepyhead with the taser? She won't be nodding off again any time soon!)

What a great sermon Rev!! I don't think anyone could ever fall asleep in your church.

So glad I can provide the cake balls and be a toe as well. Now I feel better that I am the one at our church that goes and gets the donuts every Sunday morning to make everyone fatter!

When I first read that Cliff was to entertain by doing a clog dance I thought it said a 'dog dance,' and I wondered what in the world that was! Well either way, he's probably better at the cleaning up! No offense there Cliff!!!

Great sermon. There is a great book, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand. It is a wonderul picture of the body and the church. He was a doctor to lepers in India and later worked in a leprosarium here in Louisiana (I think.)

You have such great applications. I'd be happy to serve in your church, Pastor J. D.

Jamie Dawn, you are a WONDER!

That's what I would say about you and your blog!

Well. I didn't get to do my dance so now I'm mad. I'm going to wheel around, put my nose in the air and stomp off for home. And if any of you toes or heels ever want to see me in this church again you're going to have to have the minister pay me a visit. But I probably won't get over this any time soon.
PS: Don't even think about asking me to dance again cuz I burned the shoes.

Jamie, I'm bringing the water now to Saturday night mass but there already have been seven people here before it came.
That is too bad because I mixed about a half teaspoon of Holy Water in with it. It was some that Mema brought back with us in 1980 from the Jordan River.
I had a chance to be rebaptized there but didn't do it. Now I wish I had of.

I think you might be a little prophetic also, as just when you posted this my sister-in-law, she's also a preacher's wife, from Louisiana sent this dittie about the foot.
It is about how the foot and hand can't work separately.
You try it, I can with a lot of concentration but not smoothly.

Here it is:
Something to entertain you. LOL

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT? I could not believe this!!!
Just try this. It is from an orthopedic surgeon......... This will boggle your mind and you will keep you trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!

1. Without anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction. I told you so!!!

And there's nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Send it to your friends to frustrate them too!

Good night, I am sleeping on the back pew if you need more water or anything.

Reverend JD, very nice. I suppose I am an toe. I like to talk to people and cheer them up. Now, my husband and I sit on the back row at our church and he keeps his hear up but his eyes closed. He is not sleeping because you can see him nod when the speaker says something he agrees with. I will test him by asking him questions about the talk and he can always answer any questions that I throw at him. If someone tasers him he will get mad.

I wish they had left Cliff dance, I think it would have been a real treat. You know he has been dancing for years, now you have hurt his feelings and he may never come back. Maybe this "toe" can go visit him and Marilyn and console him.

Where's Rachel, I want to get one of her cake balls before they are all gone and some of Jim's water might be nice too.

Back to the sermon: We all need each other to live a happy, productive life. My daughter was in the marching band in high school. She always felt sorry for the boy that had to carry the ladder out on the field for the drum major to chimb up on. She felt that he had a "nowhere" job. I explained to her that it was not a glamerous job but the drum major could not do his job with out the "ladder boy". She looked at it a little differently after that. Hopefully we all realize that we have much to offer in this life.

And Miss Lucy says "AMEN".

JD, good sermon this week, Preacher Girl! ;)

We all have different gifts and at times don't realize the importance of these gifts. They may not seem big to us, or appear as gifts at all, but we can't see the big picture the way God can, and what seems like an insignificant little toe gift to us may bring a HUGE big toe blessing to someone else.
