Adventures with Grandad #3
My dad came to visit for over a month, and boy did we have a good time! I call him Grandad, so if I refer to Grandad then you'll know I'm talking about my dad.
We did a lot of porch sitting and bird watching. The lightning bugs/fireflies were out in droves, and it was enjoyable to relax and watch them light up all around us. Do you call them lightning bugs or fireflies? Grandad says that only Yankees call them fireflies, and sure enough when our neighbors were over, they called them lightning bugs because they are born and bred southerners.
We laid out our bodies as a scrumptious buffet for some greedy-gutted chiggers. That was because we sat on the lawn in our lawn chairs in complete ignorance of the tasty gift we were giving to those little buggers. We paid an itchy price which lasted for about a week.
Grandad and I talked about many family stories from years past. I'll share a few now and save some for future posts. My dad's dad (my Grandpa) had a heart attack when I was a little girl. I remember when it happened and how worried we all were. What I didn't know was WHERE he had the heart attack. Grandpa was a fire sprinkler fitter just like my dad has been all my life. Grandpa had his heart attack while working in the parking garage of Stanford Hospital. I guess if you're gonna have a heart attack then THAT'S the best place to have it. Thankfully, he got emergency care immediately and lived many years after that and did not die from heart disease. He DID, however, put little pills under his tongue whenever he was feeling really stressed. Grandpa used to sit on a bar stool and watch TV preachers on this little TV on the counter, and he'd get so mad at them that he'd spit on the screen and rant and rave, then pop one of those little pills under his tongue. My brother and I saw this happen over the years, and it was really funny to see. We never could understand why he kept watching those preachers if he disliked them so much, but we sure loved watching him get so worked up!
My dad told me stories about a couple of my uncles. Both of these uncles are my mom's brothers. My Uncle Frank told my dad once that he often gets his name mixed up when he writes it down. For instance, if Uncle Frank was writing his name at the top of a school assignment, or writing his name to check in for an appointment, etc... His name is Frank Farmer, and he'd often write his name as Farnk Framer. That just tickles me to death for some reason!! (Cousin Sarah, I hope you are reading this!!)
The other uncle my dad told stories about was my Uncle Paul. Uncle Paul and my dad were on the job once and both were in Paul's work truck. Paul was driving and needed to get by another worker who'd parked his truck in the middle of the driveway with hardly enough room for anyone to squeeze past. Paul said, "Hey! Would you move your truck, please?" The guy barked back, "You could drive a tank through there!" My Uncle Paul quipped, "But I'm not driving a tank!"
The guy moved his truck. (Cousin Becky, I hope you are reading this!!)
Grandad and I visited my dear, Great-Aunt Mabel and her daughter and husband. It was about a four-hour drive to her place. She will be 95 years old in August, and she is quite a hearty lady. She calls my dad Jimmie Don.
In this video which is just over one minute long, my dad had just asked Aunt Mabel to tell about when she first met her husband, Uncle Floyd. This video is a treasure!

Oh that's good..Is Uncle Floyd still living? I love the stories about grandad#2 and #3.
He wrote a letter and asked for a date! Boy that doesn't happen anymore! Great video.
HAHA! I didn't know that my dad got his name mixed up. I'll have to ask him about it. Oddly enough, I have had more than a few people spell my name Sarha Framer over the years.
What a remarkable lady, she dosen't look almost 95yrs old.
I really enjoyed your blog and pleased your family had a grand time.
Have a lovely 4th of July.
Yvonne,
Thanks for the link to the Video...She is DELIGHTFUL, Beyond Words! The energy behind her voice is quite extraordinary, you know? Bless Her!
And when was the last time a gewntleman wrote you a letter asking for a date?? In my life, NEVER! (lol)
I know you have been enjoying this special time with your Dad, Jamie....Isn't wonderful that you are able to spend this kind of time with him....And the stories he can share with you! FABULOUS!
A HAPPY JULY 4th TO YOU AND YOURS, MY DEAR!
Oh, and I forgot to say....We called them "Fireflies" in New York....!
Most definitely lightening bugs of course!
Chiggers = no fun!!
A chigger is no bigger than the head of a small pin
But the bump that he raises
itches like crazy
And that's where the rub comes in.
I'm glad you are getting to spend so much time with your Dad!! Do have a wonderful 4th!!
Loved the video!!
Hi Jamie, you've got a good thing to milk, that Granddad. It could end up like my travel series posts, I get tired of telling before the tale runs out.
I call them lightning bugs but I know what people are talking about when they say fireflies. It doesn't have anything to do with Yankee or Southerner, the people in New Hampshire all called them lightning bugs.
When we were little, we caught them to put in a jar. When we got enough we could see in the dark, even to read a book. We were too poor to have a flashlight or candle and didn't have electricity for light bulbs.
(Sure wish we had PETA back then, they could have bought us a battery. We invented the sliding bottom fly trap they sell so we could catch those lightning bugs or fireflies with them.)
..
Aunt Mable is wonderfully spry for her age!! Sharp as a tack, I think. You must have a lot of her genes, Jamie Dawn!
I've always called them lightning bugs orally but if I am writing about them - they are fireflies!
Great video! I bet a lot of people noticed Great Aunt Mabel. Happy fourth to you and yer kinfolk!
Aunt Mabel is great. I love stories told by older people.
Happy 4th of July.
You're right - this video is a TREASURE!
And we call them lightening bugs here. Sometimes the road ditches are so full of them, it looks like Christmas lights!
Let me tell you, JD, if they ever come up with a sequel to "When Harry Met Sally," your Aunt Mabel HAS TO be in it!! Love her!!! :)
PS - I've always called them lightening bugs in upstate New York AND Miami...however, I'm not sure what I called them in Cuba (or if they even had them in Cuba).
I am so happy for you that you had that long visit with your dad. And those stories are priceless!
I loved, loved, loved that video. It is priceless. The stories made me smile too. Nice work.
What a fun time you had with your dad. Reminsicing and hearing new stories about the 'old days' is always great entertainment.
I get a chuckle about your uncle Franks twisted name too. My last name used to be Weatherby and I was surprised at how many ways Beverly Weatherby can be mixed up. It sure gave me some good laughs though.
Aunt Mabel looks and sounds like a wonderful lady. (I love her laugh) You are so blessed to know her.
I hope you had a great 4th.
Sounds like you had a great time visiting with your company and talking about things and people from the past. Every time I go outside I get eat up alive with chiggers. I hate them. Your relatives sound like such interesting people. We have always called them lightening bugs, too. Loved the video.
I'm a Yankee - born and raised, and I call em' lightning bugs!
JD,
As always- I enjoyed your visit with your dad! :)...AND -that vid was a delight to watch!
Junie
Aunt Mabel is a gem. Love the story! Makes me wish I knew how my grandparents met, since Grandma was from Canada and my grandfather was from Illinois they they borned and raised my mother in Central Washington plus most of her relatives musta come out here with her.
Hey, JD, what are you if you use both lightning bugs and fireflies?
Mixed up I guess.
Wonderful stories. Aren't old family stories great?
oh, and btw, your Aunt Mabel is a jewel.
Jamie please can you do me a favour. Judy from The otherside of the hill ask me to read her blog, unfortunately I can't get through to it for some unknown reason.
Can you tell her that when I have it sorted I will read and comment.
Thanks.
Yvonne.
